Sunday Sevens #132 22.4.18

Hello there, welcome to the latest Sunday Sevens, a week which began in bright sunshine and ended with grey cloudy skies….

Don’t go into the water!

There were reports in the media last week that lots of Portuguese Man-o-war were being washed up on Gibrataltar’s beaches. Not wishing to miss out on seeing them, I headed down to Camp Bay with the Little Postcards last Sunday to see if we could see any. We weren’t disappointed. I had never seen them before and found them rather mesmerising with their bright blue colour and tentacles drifting below the waves.

We kept our distance though, as they can be very dangerous, even lethal in some cases. I thought it best to show the children what they looked like in case they should ever encounter them again. Now they will know to avoid them in future.

I’ve got a beach!

This week I managed to keep up with the Coastal Crochet CAL (Crochet along) and now have the beginnings of a beach on my Seaside Stash-busting Blanket. It was very nautical for a while there, but now I have wet sand, seaweed and pebbles.

3 times round

I can’t quite believe I am writing this, but although I didn’t plan it, I managed three times round the Med Steps this week. I had intended to do twice round but something Mr Postcard said as he went to work (along the lines of “two not three?”) planted the seed and once I’d completed number 2, thought, why not? I went for it. It was very difficult. This photo was taken at the bottom of the final set of steps. I was sitting on the bottom step at the time! I’ve got less than a month to go now before the Med Steps 5 Challenge, so there’s no time to waste!

Princess line seams

This week’s dressmaking class was all about the princess line seams. Boring photo I’m afraid.

Double daffs

I went crazy and splashed out £2 on a bunch of daffodils for myself this week. They had beautiful double heads and made me smile.

More stepping

The beautiful sunny weather we had at the start of the week had disappeared by Friday. I headed back up the steps. It was very blustery up there and just a little bit scary as I turned the corner onto the east side. It was blowing me backwards as if I wasn’t allowed to go up. Once I was properly round onto the eastern side, it was much more sheltered and not a problem at all.

Seeing as I can’t show you blue skies on this one, I took a few pictures of the beautiful wild flowers up there, including the Gibraltar national flower (the Gibraltar Candytuft: bottom right) which is in flower in a few sheltered spots now.

Gib Rocks

There is a phenomenon sweeping Gibraltar at the moment, especially for families with young children, called Gib Rocks. It started just a few short weeks ago, and the idea is to paint rocks and stones with bright colours, a message or a picture, then hide them somewhere in Gibraltar for someone else to find. It was sparked by one Gibraltar-based family’s trip to Battle in the South of England at Easter, where a similar scheme is in operation. On their return, they set up a Facebook page called Gib Rocks and at the last count it had over 3,600 members. It’s kind of mushroomed!

Anyway, we decided to join in too. I shan’t show you what the Little Postcards painted, as they wanted to keep it a secret, but I’m rather partial to rainbows so I could only paint one thing couldn’t I? It’s drying off nicely now ready for it’s final touches, I’ll keep you posted on where it ends up…. watch this space!

Sunday Sevens #84 21.5.17

Hello everyone, I hope you have had a good week, it’s been a crazy busy one for me with endless to-do lists and jobs but somehow we made it through and I think almost all the jobs got done (which is a minor miracle).

Here’s this week’s Sunday Sevens (it’s Sunday Tens this week actually but never mind!):

A Sunday stroll

Last Sunday my legs were a little achey from the exertions of the Med Steps 5 the day before, but we went for a bit of a walk nonetheless. We found ourselves in the Alameda Botanical Gardens, which was just stunning in the spring sunshine.

We also had the rare opportunity to walk in the middle of Europa Road, as rather large crane was being removed from the site of a very big house which has been built. Normally it’s quite busy with traffic along here, but on Sunday it was so peaceful.

Beautiful balcony

This has got to be my favourite balcony in Gibraltar (apart from our own). It always looks so lovely. It looked stunning in the Monday morning sunshine.

Dress finished!

At last my princess line, lined dress with sleeves is complete! It’s been a long slog, but I got there in the end. Next project at my dressmaking class is a blouse!! With loads of buttons eek 😬 and a collar! Holy Moly! I may get that finished by Christmas 2018?!

Sad news and a crochet escape

At the beginning of last week, the crochet world heard the sad news that Jenny, the 19-year-old daughter of Little Box of Crochet founder, Amanda Bloom had died. Jenny had been living with cancer and was taken to the hearts of many of us as we contributed squares to her ‘blanket of hugs‘ late last summer.

The outpouring of love and support for Amanda and the Little Box of Crochet team has been huge online and I hope it goes someway to helping her and those close to her now and in the future.

On Wednesday, I began a new Little Box of Crochet project, designed by Lucy at Attic24 and including rainbow colours. I think we all need hope in our lives and to me that’s what a rainbow means.

Making bias binding

I have never attempted to make my own bias binding before, but I had a go on Thursday for a secret project I’m working on. I had been putting it off, but really there was no need. It was pretty easy – apart from the bit when I kept scalding my fingers and thumb with the steam from the iron while I tried to fold and press the edges at the same time!

Cake anyone?

Our church held a cake stall on Main Street yesterday to raise funds for Christian Aid week. People were incredibly generous, so if you bought a cake, a second hand book or made a donation, thank you! Your money will go to help those who need it most.

While on the stall, we were treated to a march past by the usual Saturday historical reenactment:

Later, the Royal Anglian Regiment marched by with a band to celebrate their newly awarded freedom of the city.

It was quite a sight to see.

We headed home before the classic car rally drove up Main Street… it was a busy day in Gibraltar yesterday (and I didn’t even mention the Convent Garden Paty or Museum Open Day!!).

Sunday Sevens #71 19.2.17

Hello there, this Sunday Sevens is being sent from sunny (well ok then, cloudy but dry) Manchester today as I am back in the UK on a flying visit to see my parents. Mr Postcard is back at home in Gibraltar with the Little Postcards and awaiting my return later today. It’s been such a luxury to be back in my childhood home again – just me, and to be spoiled by my Mum and Dad.

A new crochet project

Last Sunday really wasn’t up to much weather wise and we found ourselves sheltering indoors to stay dry. The highlight of our Sunday afternoon was a trip to Morrison’s supermarket café just so we could get out of the house for an hour! What else is there to do when you are house bound than start a new crochet project? 😉 I just can’t help myself.

This lovely yarn is Luisa Harding Pittura which I bought online a few months ago and was just waiting for the right project to come along for it. That project is the Spun Gold shawl by Kat Goldin of the Crochet Project. You can find it here: Kat Goldin’s blog. It’s working up really fast thanks to the quintuple trebles which pop up every six rows or so. It’s my first attempt at this stitch and so far so good, they are looking pretty even.

February weather

It’s been a bit grey and gloomy in Gibraltar all week, although it hasn’t rained all the time, it has threatened it for most of the week. This was the scene across the Bay of Gibraltar as we headed out to school on Monday, we rushed out and I rushed back home quickly in the hope of dodging the shower which was dumping it’s load across the Bay.

Whoops – spot the mistake…

So dressmaking class this week didn’t exactly go according to plan, last week’s faux pas is obvious above (note the extra bits which had to be added to the hem of two panels of my princess-line dress to-be).

Can you spot the other mistake? Yes, I managed to sew both sides of the back of the dress the same way, so I have two left back sections instead of a left and a right….. Cue trip back to the fabric shop to buy some more gabardine (I couldn’t face unpicking the princess-line seam and the double row of zig zag I’d sewn to neaten the internal seam edge) and a good deal of catching up to do next week. Whoops!

Feeling virtuous

I don’t normally post pictures of food, but I am trying to be good at the moment, we have two family weddings coming up in the next few months and I really could do with shedding a spare tyre or two. This week I have been mainly eating salad and soup and lots of fruit and veg but no pasta, rice, spuds or bread.

I got the chance to go out to lunch to Wagamamas in Ocean Village one lunchtime (my first visit) and I had this gorgeous chicken salad. It was soooooo nice and ticked all the right diet boxes too. 🙂

Off to a flyer

Thursday morning was looming ahead of me. I had an appointment and my watercolour class both at different ends of Gibraltar and no car so I set off walking in my wellies (it had been wet and was threatening more rain) and loaded up with bags containing everything I needed for the morning ahead. Imagine my joy when a friend pulled up next to me as I felt the first spit of rain and shouted ” Do you want a lift?” Thank you! I didn’t think twice. I made it into town dry and with time to spare for a coffee! Hurrah!

(There’s no watercolour featuring in Sunday Sevens this week as what I produced needs more work… I’ll share what I’ve been doing next time).

The weekend starts here…

On Friday evening I ran off and left Mr Postcard and the Little Postcards. I flew out of Gibraltar to Manchester to visit my Mum & Dad. I have never sat out on the viewing platform at the airport before, because I’ve usually got small people with me. This time though I was able to sit and relax with a G&T before take off… such luxury!

Shopping!

I had a lovely time at the Trafford Centre yesterday shopping with my Mum. We don’t get the chance to do that kind of thing very often and we both really enjoyed it. We both had success and got most of what we’d gone for… hurrah!
