Gibraltar does a good arch, so I’ve had plenty to choose from this week!
These beauties can be found on the front of the former Police Station in Irish Town. The building is currently unused, so hopefully someone will breathe new life into it soon. It’s too nice to lie empty for long.
This unassuming arch is the the entrance to the Tower of Homage, also know as Moorish Castle.
Inside the Tower, it’s full of ancient Moorish arches.
Gibraltar’s old city walls have a fair few arches cut into them to allow for traffic.
It’s old buildings also feature many fine examples of arches…
Although some are no longer there… owing to a redevelopment called ‘The Arches’.
Sacred Heart Church boasts elegant arches on its entrance porch.
We even had brightly lit Christmas light arches last year!

Interesting but sad to see so much neglect
I guess it’s good that at least some of these interesting arched buildings are being saved, if not all of them.
I thought the idea was to convert the police station to flats, but that is usually said about all old empty buildings. Surprised it hasn’t been demolished for an ugly high rise. Nice selection of Gib arches though.
Surely they won’t pull it down 🙁 it’s a beautiful façade. Don’t know about the interior though…
There’s something romantic but melancholy about some of the more sad-looking buildings. Interesting photos, thanks for showing them.
My pleasure Sheila, I have to agree. There used to be a lot more of these sad looking buildings when we first arrived in Gibraltar but slowly they are being renovated and brought back to life. I do like an abandoned, shabby building though… it sets the mind racing about the lives which have lived and loved inside. 🙂

I feel as if I live in such a boring place in terns of architecture. This would be a fascinating vacation spot.
Hi Joe, tens of thousands of people visit Gibraltar each month on cruise ships and tourism brings a large percentage of the Rock’s economy, so many people would agree with you. Although, I often find the best, most fascinating parts of Gibraltar are tucked away off the beaten track, so he tourists don’t actually see a lot of what is special about Gibraltar. If you do ever stop off here for a visit, make sure you wander off up back streets and keep your eyes open for all the little quirks 🙂
There are some history stories in these great images, pity developers don’t agree in one.
Yes, it’s a shame. I guess at least they are saving some of the arches and it’s better to do that than leave them to rot. I never saw the building (which used to be a Police Barracks) in its heyday but I can imagine it was a pretty imposing building.
